Politicians debate over change of name for French Polynesia
(Tahitipresse) - During the last Assembly session Thursday in Papeete, French Polynesia President Oscar Temaru and Opposition leader Edouard Fritch talked about a possible change of name for French Polynesia. A referendum on this issue could be organized, Temaru said.
Fritch, from Gaston Flosse's pro-autonomy Tahoeraa huiraatira, claimed the name "Maohi Nui" Temaru has been using lately for French Polynesia is improper.
Maohi means Polynesians in reo maohi, the Tahitian language, some linguists say. But some other linguists think this word is not the correct one.
Fritch also added that "Tahiti Nui" - the words former French Polynesia President Gaston Flosse often used in the past - could be a good proposal.
Temaru said this question could be raised during the large round of consultations to start June 16 called "Etats Generaux".
Politicians, managers, trade unions and associations are to discuss during several weeks on major themes linked to economic developement and political future.
These consultations have been decided by Paris for all the French overseas territories after weeks of social unrest in the French West Indies earlier this year.
If there is a will to change French Polynesia's name, Temaru - who also leads the pro-independence Tavini Huiraatira party - said that a referendum on this issue should be organized.
Using the words "Maohi Nui" has nothing to do with "racism" or "race differences", it is just a way to "enhance Polynesian culture", Temaru added.
If a referendum was to be organized, the words "French Polynesia" should not even be proposed to voters, he claimed.
"French Polynesia is an absolutely abstract concept", Temaru also said last Friday.
